MOISTURE-HARVESTING LIZARD SKINS AS AN INSPIRATON FOR PERFORMATIVE BUILDING ENVELOPES IN ARID CLIMATES

Research on shape-shifting adaptive architectural skins has recently focused bio-inspired programmable materials. Only a few studies however examine the microstructure of living organisms, especially in terms morphological adaptation harsh climatic conditions. This paper explores moisture-harvesting lizard skins, specifically Trapelus species Agamidae family North-East Africa, as an inspiration for materials building arid climate Egypt. The investigates ability to improve durability and capabilities based surface formation, utilizing digital fabrication techniques. A series physical experiments were conducted different samples 3D printed wood filament under several humidity conditions, single layer, with textured patterns, addition potassium chloride chemical composite. concluded that composed patterns composites exhibited highest moisture retention, therefore leading advantages its use climates, through wide variety design possibilities performative envelopes.
